Facelift Surgery Evolves to Include Fat Grafting
Dr. Clyde Ishii, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Honolulu, HI, explains how facelift surgery techniques have evolved and what fat grafting can do to enhance the results.
Dr. Ishii explains that historically, facelifts were performed by elevating the skin off the underling muscles, pulling the skin back. He cautions against using the skin as a vehicle to lift fat.
“What we like to do is use the deeper layer to do the work and then naturally re-drape the skin in order to avoid the tall-tale signs of a facelift,” Notes Dr. Ishii.
One type of facelift is the SMAS Facelift, which is a deep facelift surgery that is meant to reduce the appearance of sagging jowls, cheeks, and neck skin. The deeper layer facelift helps to enhance the longevity of the results, the shape, and appearance.
