Dr. Zachary was born in Yorkshire, England. Following his medical school education at the , University of London, he trained in Internal Medicine and Dermatology. In 1985 he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan for his formal Mohs fellowship training. He subsequently returned to the UK to set up London's first Mohs Surgery and Laser Surgery unit.

Dr. Zachary is recognized for his role in the advancement of dermatologic surgery in the US and aboard, and is a popular speaker nationally and internationally on the treatment of skin cancer and laser surgery. 

He is a leading expert in the laser treatment of skin conditions including burns, scars and contractures. He has very significant experience in the removal of port wine stains, telangiectases, and cutaneous pigmentary anomalies. He performs numerous aesthetic procedures including the treatment of photoaged and precancerous skin conditions, and is an expert in the use of dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, and sclerotherapy for varicose veins.
  Dr. Zachary has published many articles on diseases of the skin, both research and clinical. He has written or edited more than 70 articles, books, book chapters, reports, and abstracts, is a regular contributor to academic meetings both in the U.S. and abroad, and has been a popular figure on the radio, in the press and on national TV.  He has held many administrative positions within specialty societies including President of the Association of Academic Dermatologic Surgeons.  Over the years, Dr. Zachary has served on numerous editorial boards and national committees, directed many national and international meetings, and has presented more than 250 papers in the U.S. and abroad. For seven years, he co-chaired the popular Lasers in Cutaneous and Cosmetic Surgery courses held in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and London. He currently runs a number of national meetings including Hawaii Dermatology Symposium, Summit in Aesthetic Medicine, and Las Vegas Dermatology. He founded the online educational programs www.mdlive.net which is used in over 50 countries worldwide and by 70% of dermatology programs in the US.

He has pioneered microscopic detection of skin cancer by rapid immunocytochemistry in frozen sections. With his colleague Dr. Sergei Grando, he has cultured the first "immortal" basal cell cancer cell lines. His interest in lasers has led to significant industry supported research in optimal laser systems for cutaneous surgery, and the development of new laser systems for facial rejuvenation. His most recent research revolved around optimization of new devices which such as TRASER, a light based system which is more electro-optically efficient than a laser. He is a pioneer in the development of direct blue laser light technology. Further, he has been instrumental in developing home based devices for treatment of various skin conditions.
